The Haugland / Tippa farm is probably one of the oldest in the district and is mentioned in the Bjørgvin calfskin around 1350. At that time, the farm was under Kristkyrkja in Bergen. Later, new owners came in, and ownership has changed frequently over the centuries. Originally, the houses at Haugland probably had two yards, one on each side of the Sjurslidelva river.

The background to the name Tippa
The farm name Tippen/Tippa (which means "tufted grassland", from gno. *Typpvin) is one of the very oldest farm names in Eid, mentioned in several sources from the Middle Ages. Tippen was both a farm and family name for 1000 years.

All Tippa farms were called Tippen until around 1900, when the users applied to change to Haugland. In 2018, the residents of Haugland expressed a wish to use the old farm name for the road through Tippatunet. In 2018, the name was therefore changed back to Tippa (Ref: Fjordabladet May 25, 2018).

Historical variants of the farm name Tippa (ref. Ålandsboka)
"The farm was previously called Tippen. The old name was probably Typpvin, later shortened to Typpin. In more recent times, Tippa has been used in accordance with the sound transitions for other "vin names", e.g. Leikvin - Løkja, Heggvin - Heggja. Much of the farm used to be moor with many tufts in it.

The name has been written in Typpinn approx 1350, Tipptenn 1520, Topprønn, Toppen, Tappen 1522, Tippen 1548, Thipenn 1563".
